For the school’s Hispanic Heritage Night, I made a collection of pieces to help bring the celebration to life. Each one offers something different—from the bright colors of “Celebrando Nuestra Herencia” to the small details tucked into the wooden garland and illuminated lantern. At the heart of the collection is an engraved piece titled “HERENCIA,” with an older woman and a young girl framing a scene of dancers in a town square. Beneath them are the words: “The stories before us. The future after us.” That message brings the collection together: the connection between generations, the stories families carry, and what we pass along to our children. The other pieces include a floral cutout banner, a lantern filled with birds and garden details, and an engraved portrait featuring an elaborate flower-covered hat and decorative skull makeup. Together, they bring color, light, and detail to an evening centered on heritage and belonging. This project gave me a way to contribute something I made with my own hands to a celebration in our school community.

Why we made it

I wanted to contribute something personal to the school’s Hispanic Heritage Night—pieces that would help families feel welcomed and give students something to notice, enjoy, and talk about. The words “Cultura, Familia, Comunidad” on the heritage engraving capture the spirit I wanted the collection to carry: culture, family, and community.
